This book provides an introduction to the mathematics needed to model, analyze, and design feedback systems. It is an ideal textbook for undergraduate and graduate students, and is indispensable for researchers seeking a self-contained reference on control theory. Unlike most books on the subject, Feedback Systems develops transfer functions through the exponential response of a system, and is accessible across a range of disciplines that utilize feedback in physical, biological, information, and economic systems.
They begin with state space tools for analysis and design, including stability of solutions, Lyapunov functions, reachability, state feedback observability, and estimators. The matrix exponential plays a central role in the analysis of linear control systems, allowing a concise development of many of the key concepts for this class of models. They provide exercises at the end of every chapter, and an accompanying electronic solutions manual is available.
Feedback Systems is a complete one-volume resource for students and researchers in mathematics, engineering, and the sciences. Covers the mathematics needed to model, analyze, and design feedback systems Serves as an introductory textbook for students and a self-contained resource for researchers Includes exercises at the end of every chapter Features an electronic solutions manual Offers techniques applicable across a range of disciplines.

Exercises are provided at the end of every chapter, and an accompanying electronic solutions manual is available. In summary, this work is a valuable addition to the important area of control and feedback systems. Prasad, Choice “[T]his is a refreshing text which is delightful to read, and which even experts in the area may find a valuable resource for its diverse applications, and exercises, and its clear focus on fundamental concepts that does not get side-tracked by technical details.
It is addressed to engineers and scientists who are interested in feedback systems in physical, biological, information and social systems.
It provides an accessible treatment for a wide audience who systsms otherwise have to labor through difficult mathematical or engineering treatments. The only prerequisite is a basic understanding of differential equations and linear algebra. This is a unique and excellent book.
I believe it will appeal to a broad audience. Jacobsen, Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm. Would you like to tell us about a lower price? If you are a seller for this product, would you like to suggest updates through seller support? Read more Read less.

Still, it explains things reasonably well, and is a pretty good place to start. Requires a decent linear algebra background to understand most of the early feedgack. I’m wrapping up a masters degree in control systems at University of Washington, and this book is basically a summary of everything I’ve learned in the past two years. One person found this helpful.
The authors did a poor job in explaining many vital concepts. Apparently they failed to pay attention to their narratives and the writing is too casual for such a highly technical material.
Throughout the book I have written down numerous notes to correct errors or clarify confusions due to the authors’ ambiguous expressions and careless uses of technical terminologies.

Especially, the section 4. A good introductory alternative, although light on transfer function approach, is Luenberger’s dynamical systems.
Needed this for a class. Ended up not using it too much, and when we did use it the book it often contradicted what was taught in class and was certainly not used in the same order. This book is an excellent introduction to modern control theory. Rich in interdisciplinary examples and it goes directly to the point. The book gives the intuitive idea without unnecessary math.
It also doesn’t include a lot of the classical control theory that is taught in electrical engineering courses, focusing more on the modern stuff. Understanding the math in the book requires more prior knowledge than is said in the preface of the book. I like the cover texture. The texture on this book is the soft touch feedbavk. I really like it. The organization of material reflects a great deal of insight by the authors into how to convey the ffedback important concepts to a new reader.
The book has many excellent examples, ranging from very simple to real-world. I recommend this book for feedbaci with a sufficient mathematical preparation linear algebra and ordinary differential equations. The authors are also leading researchers in control theory, and they provide additional insight through suggested further reading and explanations about when simplifying assumptions break down.
The book isn’t too bad. The explanations are decently clear, but do require you to pay attention to all the details and steps in the proof or approach. But what irks me the most is that the book does an absolutely appalling job of telling you the difference between a matrix and a vector and a scalar. When you have an mrray with 15 terms to feedbacl track of, feedbck gets really confusing and annoying.
